Vision 20/20: Through the Eyes of a Child

At our Valentine's Masquerade Ball in February, we announced our new Capital Campaign: Vision 20/20.

It became apparent in the summer of 2014 that the first phase of Vision 2020 needed to be renovation of the second floor of our building for more exhibit space.  We had many busy, crowded days and set a new one-day attendance record of 818. The work began in late fall 2014 as we began to prepare the second floor of our building for renovation. We will also build a fire escape for the 2nd floor and install new electrical and heating/cooling systems. The renovation will also preserve the history of the building as we will restore an original brick wall, ceiling, lighting fixtures, and wainscoting.

Other components of Vision 2020 (to be accomplished in future years) include moving the kitchen area to the events area on the lower level, transforming the current kitchen area into a large, state of the art water play room, and creating and installing a modern hospital nursery for budding health care professionals.

Our first capital campaign was for the purchase of our building.  With outstanding community support, the Sandcastles Board of Directors paid the balance owing on our building in April 2013. The building is ours!!

Donations for Other Capital Expenses

In 2011, we began to raise funds for a new roof.  In 2013 we had to make repairs to the roof because of leaks from the heavy spring rains. Therefore, we will probably not have to replace the entire roof immediately. Money previously donated for the roof remains earmarked for that purpose.

We also need to repair and/or replace much of the brick and stone work on the exterior.

Looking ahead:  To make the second story accessible to all, we will need an elevator.

Recognition of Giving

Each named level of giving is acknowledged on one of the donor boards in the entry of the museum.  All donations made by an individual, family, foundation, business, or grant maker accrue so those who donate move up to higher levels as their donations increase.
